Altun ha and Belize

Altun Ha, which also served as a trade center, is located only seven miles from the sea and is surrounded by primary broadleaf rainforest. This site captured world attention when Professor David Pendergast, of the Royal Ontario museum, discovered the now famous nine and a half pound jade head of the sun god Kinich Ahau. The discovery was made in the tomb of a Royal Priest within the main temple of the masonry altars. Prepared stone steps allow visitors to climb atop three of the main temples on the site in order to capture the beautiful views of the scenic countryside. tour Price $45.00 Child $23.00 (Aprox 4 1/2 hours) The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center was started in 1983 as an attempt to provide home for various wild animals that had been featured in documentary films about the rainforest. From the very beginning, it was apparent that the Belizian visitors to the Zoo were not familiar with the differnt species of wild life that shared their country and all the efforts were made to transform the little zoo into a dynamic wildlife education center. Today, the Belize Zoo covers apoximately 29 acres of tropical savanna and features over 125 animals native to belize, many of which were found injured and nursed abck to health. Enjoy the magnificent range of mamals and birds and reptiles from jaguars to howlers, toucans to egrets and crocodiles to tree frogs, all in their natural habitat. Your journey will begin as you depart from the cruise ship pier passing some of the highlights of Belize City, as you travel along the western highway aproximately 30 miles before arriving at the zoo and education center. You will spend aproximately 1 1/2 hours touring the Zoo and Education Center before returning to Belize to view more highlights. Located on a natural limestone ridge, the site provides panoramic views of the hilly Cayo district and is situated just two miles from the Guatemala border. The largest temple is "El Castillo" which has been excavated and partially restored. This temple is famous for its frieze, a banded stucco decoration that at one time extended around the entire pyramid. The introductory site history and display center is found at the entrance to the center and is one of the major attractions. Delve into the Mayan world as you visit the site's three plazas and partially excavated ball court. At the conclusion of your visit you will enjoy a delicious lunch at Mayland Villas' splendid Cabana Restaurant and you will even have some time to shop at the handicraft market. |
Biking in Belize Price $48.00 (Aprox 6 hours) Enjoy this natural rainforest setting as your guide takes you trhough some of the best trails that belize has to offer. After an approximate one hour drive to the rainforest, you will participate in a short orientation before guides lead you on your bike adventure. The 3 1/2 -4 hour journey will take you through medicinal nature trails and part natural ponds, home to a few of the area's crocodiles. Pay attention to your surroundings and you may be rewarded by spotting some of the area's indigenous wildlife such as: iguana's, various birds, possum, anteaters, foxes, rabbits, and many more.
